With a Little Help of O.U.R. Friends

For it is in giving that we receive.”
~ Francis of Assisi

I am not a friend of charity. While I used to “give” in the past, I have since made decisions about the ways I give, to whom and what do I give.

I believe we should give to those we truly care for and before giving to far-away and obscure causes, where we really don’t know how the money is being used or how many other hands it stayed in too long before reaching those in need…

I also believe in giving beyond money: giving your time, skills and attention.

I believe resilience is built not with charity or top-down, reactive approaches, but allowing people to assess, see and use their own strengths and assets to build the reality they need and want.

But we still live in a society where money is needed: to pay debts and mortgages, buy medicines and equipment, and to make certain extraordinary dreams coming true.

And there are times when somebody we love and care for needs our support beyond what we can give, and no amount of love, skills, attention and time will pay for what they need.

I have received much more than I can possibly pay back from O.U.R. Ecovillage and the extraordinary people I have met there.

O.U.R. Ecovillage holds Permaculture and natural building courses, tours and many other educational programs. They offer internships and volunteering opportunities, and they teach by example: nothing is wasted, all is integrated and creatively used, everybody is welcomed and acknowledged while, at the same time, everybody is reminded of the responsibility we all have in this world.

I usually don’t ask anything from readers of my blog. But I will break that rule this time. Take a few minutes to read this story and watch the video link below.

And if you care and have the means to do so, please donate. O.U.R. friends need our help, little by little, we may build a better place for all.

Give today, and the whole world will smile at you.

Thank you,

Silvia

About Silvia TIC

Welcome to these exercises inside the dimensions of what we are: we are what we dream and think and feel, but we are also the different characters we perform, not just the roles (mother, wife, friend), but those things we call “occupations” or “earning a life”. More than anything, we are part of a giant ecosystem and all what we do connects and impacts others (people, animals, plants, air, water...)
